Week of Sept 25-28

Well this week has been going great. We are in week 2 of Core A and week 28 of Core B. I think right now all is well with curriculum. It is a lot of work doing 2 cores, but the kids are having a blast. I am trying to add in some hands on ideas as we go and it is working nicely.

Kayla

So we have been looking at early civilization in Core A. We looked at how the Egyptians dressed and so we made our own Egyptian necklaces. Of course since this was a crafty thing all the kids had to be  a part of it. Noah made a dragon on his and Kayla made a puppy. Brie just had fun with stickers :) Kayla also made a flower hat with pipe cleaners to go with the necklace.
Today we also covered Egyptian pyramids and how mummies were made. There is a great link for that one too and takes you through the mummifying process. how to make a mummy  I promise you it is not for the faint of heart :) We also spelled our names in hieroglyphics here is the link

We have also started Singapore math 1A and it has been going well also. I read an idea in HOD about drawing 2 trees and using candy or cereal to put on the tree to show how different amounts add up to 6, 7, 8, 9... So far so good.

LA is doing nicely also. We are on week 24 and working on u. We are reading book #15 in K readers. I also have her read some of readers 1, but we are doing that randomly right now. The other day her assignment was to be "the teacher" and explain how to do something and so they have made up these little muffs which are little pom poms with eyes. It was really neat to see her explain and she did quite well...GO KAYLA!!!

Science K is also a blast! We are learning about the weather and have read a lot about the water cycle. There was an awesome experiment that went with the Usborne Internet linked Encyclopedia but we didn't get to it. Hopefully we will sometimes this week because I actually have everything you need for it.

Noah
For Noah we have been working on week 28 in Core B. I am so excited to be getting close to the end of the core. I hope we finish quickly, but we are having fun doing it and I am not really in a hurry to get him done. The suspense of purchasing Core C is getting to me, but we will wait till I am done with this one :)
Right now we have been working through Greece and Persia attacking it. So far no luck for the Persians. When the Persians marched 2 million men to Greece they had to build a bridge and they did it with their boats. We made aluminum foil boats and marched our little guys across them in the sink and was cute, sorry no pics of that.

Science has been moving nicely also. We are learning about Earth right now in Apologia. It is amazing to see God's hand at so many things when he created it. We have learned that there is the perfect mass which makes us have just the right amount of gravity and it spins at just the right speed creating the perfect climate for us and it is just the right distance from the sun so we are not too hot or cold and life can exist.

Math we ordered Singapore because he is doing well with TT, but he needed a change from the computer. We are about to lesson 50 in TT so I just ordered Singapore 2A and figured that he can always use the review and writing practice. I know Singapore might cover things a little differently than TT does also so as long as we get done with the programs eventually I am good.

LA is also going well. We made it to the 1/3 way through SL. I am happy he is doing so well with it. We are suppose to write a poem about an orange this week but since there aren't many rhyming words and he hasn't made a poem before we switched it to lime so he can come up with more rhyming words. I hope to post it later in the week after he has made it. He really loves SL LA, especially the creative writing assignments. We are working through some of R&S English also for the extra grammar, but we mostly do that orally. Spelling is going OK, but he does miss AAS. Maybe I will pick it up when I order Core C, but we will see.

So that is our week so far. Hope you all have a blessed week in the Lord :)

  1. Sounds like a fun week! My kids loved studying ancient Egypt and learning about mummies and pyramids. That has been one of our more exciting studies! We're not in the fall of Rome and getting ready to head into the Middle Ages. I can't wait!
