July 2011

Well it is a start of the new school year and we are off. Noah has started 1st grade...that mean we successfully have completed 1 year of homeschooling :) So we are starting a little early this year because we are expecting baby Stefko #4 at the end of January. So this year we have decided to use our dear Sonlight again. I am loving this approach with all the great literature. Sometimes I feel a bit all over the place but I think it will resolve once I get into the swing of things.
So here is a bit of what's on the plate for the year
SL Core 1 which is now called Core B: This is Intro to World History part 1. We are using their Bible program too which is Leading Little Ones to God. We are loving this book so far. It really is a good basic understanding of who God is. I am using it with both Noah and Kayla so that is great. There is also regular Bible readings that go with this so we are graduating from kids bible to big people Bible!
History is great so far we are reading a book that tells a lot about different people groups and cultures and there is also a book about missionary stories which is great too.
The read alouds are going well also. We are 1/3 of the way through Charlotte's Web. I have been reading this to both Noah and Kayla at bedtime and they both like it. I can't wait to get to Mr. Poppler's Penguines so we can watch the movie afterwards.

Math this year we are in Singapore 1A right now. We are about half the way through this book. Noah loves it mostlikely because there is not so much writing as Horizons. I do have MUS and Miquon for extra if I feel he needs some reinforcement, but he is doing well right now :)

LA: Well, I started with Sl, but I am not liking the spiral approach in LA so we are using FLL and WWE. Noah really likes these two programs right now. FLL is gentle and he is gradually learning about nouns. WWE has some copywork but it isn't too bad. We are still using SL for readers and ETC that they have scheduled. We have also added in AAS 1. He likes that and I think it will really help reinforce his phonics and spelling is more on grade level with that since we were on SL LA 2 so this is more his speed.

Science: We didn't do all of SL A science so we are on week 5 or so of that and will be using it. It is more of an overview type learning right now, but that is ok. On day 4/5 there are experiments that you can do and also a nifty DVD that comes with it that shows you how to do them, so if I am being lazy or don't have all the materials we can just watch the guy do them for us :)

Well, I think that is about all for now, blessings :)
